First Chiropractic Appointment – What Happens?

For many people, booking a first chiropractic appointment comes with a bit of uncertainty. You might know you’re in pain, or something doesn’t feel right, but not be entirely sure what to expect once you walk through the door. That’s completely normal. Most first appointments are more about understanding what’s going on rather than jumping straight into treatment.

At Lichfield Chiropractic Clinic, the first visit is structured so there’s time to listen, assess properly, and decide on the right next step, rather than rushing anything.

Arrive At The Clinic

Your appointment usually starts in a straightforward way. You’ll be welcomed by the reception team and given a moment to settle in. Nothing complicated, but it helps make sure you’re comfortable before seeing the chiropractor.

Once you’re called through, the chiropractors will introduce themselves and explain how the appointment will run. If you’re feeling a bit apprehensive, this is usually where that eases. There’s no pressure to know the “right” words to describe your problem; that part comes next.

Talking Through Your Symptoms

A large part of the first assessment is simply talking. The chiropractor will ask about the issue that brought you in, how long it’s been going on, what makes it better or worse, and how it’s affecting your day-to-day life. That might include work, sleep, exercise, or things you’ve stopped doing because of pain.

They’ll also ask about your general health and medical history. This isn’t just box-ticking. Previous injuries, operations, medications, or long-standing conditions can all influence what’s going on now. In most cases, the aim is to build a clear picture rather than focus on one isolated symptom.

The Physical Assessment

After the discussion, the chiropractor will carry out a physical assessment. This usually involves looking at posture, movement, joint function, and muscle tension. Depending on your symptoms, they may check reflexes, strength, or sensation to see how the nervous system is responding.

The assessment isn’t about seeing how much pain you can tolerate. If something feels uncomfortable, you’re encouraged to say so. The findings from this stage help determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate and, if it is, how it should be approached.

What Happens Next?

In many cases, treatment doesn’t begin immediately on the first visit. Instead, the information from your history and assessment is reviewed, and you’re asked to return for a follow-up appointment. This is often called reports of findings.

During that appointment, the chiropractor explains what they believe is causing the problem, what treatment options are available, and what sort of improvement might be realistic. If chiropractic care is suitable, treatment can begin at that point. If not, you’ll usually be advised on alternate options or referred elsewhere if needed.

This step is important. It gives you the chance to ask questions and make an informed decision, rather than feeling rushed into anything.
